KRISTIAN SVERDRUP

Circus 2009
Wood
90 x 90 x 120 cm
This jumble of thick red, pushed together and overlapping letters forms the word CIRCUS when viewed from a certain perspective. The plastic, sculptural form emphasizes the word by creating three-dimensionality, lending it space and meaning. The word CIRCUS looks like a signal and the redness of the word sculpture underscores this effect.
Kristian Sverdup grapples with the role of company names and logos by presenting them abstractly and using techniques from Pop Art sculpture. He alludes to the constantly increasing influence of brands in a globalized world. At once critical and humorous, Sverdrup confronts us with their presence, as they occupy an increasingly large place in our everyday life. Circus is thus like an oversized logo for the loud, colorful and great world of the circus, which also appeals to our perception.

Mickey 2010
Wood
70 x 50 x 70 cm
Similar to Circus, the wooden sculpture Mickey consists of several stacked symbols. These icons are well-known from the media: the ears of the Playboy bunny and Disney’s Mickey Mouse, the logo of Al Jazeera and FOX News add up to a multi-layered and thought-provoking combination.
