COCKTAIL DESIGNERS

How tall am I? 2009
Paper
61 x 248 cm
Édith Piaf, Diego Maradona, or Napoleon Bonaparte? Or rather Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, or Uma Thurman? How tall am I and who is my height?
Famous figures from politics, science, film and music are indicated on a chart of dimensions, with their respective physical size indicated in centimetres. Now and then viewers let out a surprised ‘ooh’ or ‘aah’ when looking at the heights and comparing them to their own size. The members of the public are invited to enter their own heights in a blank row next to the celebrities and thus to feel a little like them. Looking at the smallest (91 cm) and largest (211 cm) figures in the list makes one thing of circus attractions with giants and midgets.

Biography

A girl, two boys: Cocktail Designers is a design trio settled in Lyon and founded in 2004 by Claire Moreux, Olivier Huz, Olivier Vadrot and Lionel Mazelaygue. The latter has since left the group.
The story begins, as with any English pop groups, through chance encounters on the benches of an art school. Claire Moreux (1977) and Olivier Huz (1976) met at the Strasbourg School of Decorative Arts in 1998. They soon began working together to design CD jackets for their musician friends, in particular for Aspic Records. Olivier Vadrot (1970) and Lionel Mazelaygue met on the benches of the Lyon School of Architecture. As Claire and Olivier were getting settled in Lyon in 2000, they discovered the La Salle de Bains art center and its founders, Olivier and Lionel. They all decided to form a partnership.
Claire and Olivier are graphic designers while Olivier and Lionel are both architects and designers. The combination of their skills enables them to work in every domain (architecture, scenography, exhibition curatorship, art direction, graphics and sound creation) in a series of crossovers that borrow from both historic avant-gardes and the collaborative spirit of electronic music.
